Brexit - Two Months On.
Brexit Referendum - two months on
It was June 22nd and polling due to begins in less than eight hours. I'm was not sure that we (Leavers) have done enough to win but I was sure that barring a truly dramatic upset in the polling the Remain camp were the losers, Because, after 40 years of European 'togetherness' a massive segment of the population of Britain wants OUT. If that is not failure then what is?
Since the start of the Campaign we had been inundated with what can only be described as an avalanche of Remain propaganda. I think just about anybody who draws a Government Paycheck both here and in Brussels has foamed at the mouth like rabid Chihuahuas, desperate to do their (political) master bidding and convince us that the world as we know it would end on a Brexit vote. And despite their 'Operation Fear', funded in large part with our taxes, they had failed dismally.
Then came the results. And the Political Do-Do hit the fan. And there was plenty to go round!
Vote Leave, the Official campaign for the Outers closed it's doors and imploded, It's Front Men scuttled off to Conservative Headquarters to commit ritual political murder/suicide amongst the 'victors' so that the Remain Camp could appoint one of their own to the Premiership.
The Labour Party discovered that, despite it's protestations, It no longer has any real connection with it's traditional (lets call them blue-collar) voters in either Scotland or England but had become a party of Progressive Socialist Elitists based primarily in London and our Higher Education Establishments.
It's present internal squabbling appears to be about it's current Leader having not done enough to inspire and ensure a pro-european vote from it's 'traditional' voters. The Party, unlike it's electors remains rabidly pro-european.
The Liberal Democrat Party, turns out to be neither Liberal or Democratic but committed to a European Super-State. From their election results at the last General Election, voters recognised that and sent the Lib/Dems packing. In fact, with the benefit of hindsight it could be argued that after 5 years of Conservative - Lib/Dem coalition it was the promise of a Referendum and Lib/Dem , Labour opposition which won the election for David Cameron.
Since his decision to call the Referendum, David Cameron had in my humble opinion been in a downward spiral, approaching a political free fall, until he quit his Office (at last!). Like most of his colleagues (in all parties) he had become part of the Palace of Westminster subservience. His eyes locked firmly, not on his electorate but his peers and erstwhile political friends in Club Brussels.
We may never know if Cameron failed as a negotiator, indeed whether his heart was truly in the negotiation or whether those he negotiated with did so in good faith and or the understanding that failure could lead to Brexit. The deal he came to the electorate with was, to say the least, pathetic.
Cameron came home with a sorry excuse for a deal and decided to hold the Referendum anyway. He pushed the Remain position on his Party, his Government and pretty much anybody he could threaten cajole or bribe, At just about any point he could have backed off, stepped away from the campaign and have retained his Premiership regardless of the outcome but like so many of his political contemporaries he succumbed to his own vanity and decided he could impose his will on the electorate, in the privacy of the voting booth.
Again, with hindsight, it is clear that Cameron was a deeply floored leader. Just about any sensible politicians knows you never ask a question unless you are sure of the answer. He then compounded his problems by refusing to formulate or allow others in Government to formulate any kind of Brexit strategy. When he lost, having staked his whole reputation on victory he had a childish tantrum, in effect threw his toys out of his pram and left his party and the Nation in turmoil, Until his party could elect a new leader, Prime Minister, potentially as late as September the Nation would have been adrift in a sea of uncertainty. A very poor showing from a discredited leader.
So now, two months on we have the Remainer Teresa May at Number 10, and a Parliament charged by the people with a Brexit mandate who's members are overwhelmingly pro-EU. Lets move forward, for as long as we pay (the EU) we play. Nothing happens in Europe without our consent until we get the deal we want then we trigger Article 50 and leave. Parliament can go back to work having been idle for most of the last four decades, and craft Legislation for our Nation and without regard to Brussels.
